At last, somebody else out there remembers them – I have memories of my grandmother buying them for us as a special treat in the mid sixties in Bedfordshire. The best way to eat them was to try and scoop out the filling with ones’ tongue, and leave the chocolate shell intact as long as possible. I definitely think that the children of today are missing the most exquisite form of tooth decay known to confectioners in the mid twentieth century! Bring back Showboats!

Scoop out the filling with ones’ tongue
Whoopee, yes
I agree wholeheartedly. I’ve wondered for years where these gems disappeared and why. Perhaps some CJ clone ref Sunshine desserts of Regie Perrin fame thought they were no longer great super or smashing, which is exactly what they were. Also, far superior to much of the muck delivered us these days.Have a heart chaps Lyon , get the stuff back on the shelves, they’re a winner. Believe me, I’m a consumer, or was until you did the dastardly.
I totally agree
I totally agree. Please bring back Kunzle Showboats. They are the only cakes I can remember from Sunday teas at my grannies when I was a child. I still miss them!
I too have fond memories of Kunzle cakes
And seeing the ad at the end of your web page really made my mouth water. I am heartily behind your campaign to revive them as I would like my children to know and love them too!
Why on earth were Kunzle Cakes taken out of production?
Why on earth were Kunzle Cakes taken out of production? They were a very special addition to a cup of tea (or coffee) in tea shops. I have referred to them often in nostalgic reminiscenses with friends and family. If there is any justice they will be brought back again before I become too old to appreciate them or before the nanny state bans such delights completely.I spent a week in Camber Sands in Sussex in the late sixties and every afternoon I drove to a little cafe in Winchelsea to have my fix of afternoon tea and cake. Kunzle of course. Ah, memories
Pity there is no easy way to register support with RHM
I have an idea that one supermarket brought them back in the 1990’s. I definitely read this in the newspapers at the time but it was one that doesn’t have stores in the North. What I recall (from the 1960’s) is that the chocolate was good and was thick.
It’s a pity there is no easy way to register support with RHM – looks like one has to write a letter
Hope it wasn’t the cakes that led to my visit to the dentist
I am 55 now and my late mother used to take me into a good quality coffee shop after I had been to the dentist for treatment -provided I had been a ‘brave boy’! She probably couldn’t really afford it, but she used to buy me real filter coffee and a Kunzle Cake of my choice! I shudder to think what they might cost now, if we saw them resurrected!I still talk about them to people – all of whom look at me blankly. But I say: ‘bring them back’. Unlike mother, I can probably afford to buy a box of them and so – hang the price and let’s have some again.
PS Hope it wasn’t the cakes that led to my visit to the dentist!!
Kunzle cakes – yes! bring them back!
I have just stumbled across your site while doing a search for Kunzle cakes, and it’s good to know I’m not the only one who has fond memories of the showboats. We used to buy them on holiday in Wales or the Lake District when I was a child and we always looked forward to eating them after a picnic. I wish you could still buy them as there is nothing quite like them and no other cake has yet matched up to them
