Sarah Kennedy and Waitrose
sometime ago Sarah Kennedy campaigned on her radio show to bring these cakes back. Waitrose started to sell them once again in certain stores. I dont know if they still do, but it might be worth getting in touch with them, I support your campaign as I too remember these delicious cakes from my childhood and would give anything to eat one again

Just discoverd your website while searching for an image of a show boat. My grandad was the works manager of C Kunzle Ltd in Birmingham and he invented the Show Boat! My father remembers well the trouble my grandad initially got in when he started producing show boats without first approving the scheme with Christain Kunzle - he returned from Switzerland to find the factory and production line in full flow. Apparently the trauma soon passed when Kunzle realised how profitable the new show boats were proving! My grandad loved working for Kunzles and even as an old man was the best cake maker I have ever met. I have inherited a full suitcase of wonderful recipes and cook books, some dating back to the early 1800’s and many fleyrs for kunzle recipes and delights.

It is nice to know that the recipes for Kunzle cakes have not gone to oblivion - ever thought of putting them in a book or getting in touch with a famaous tv chef. perhaps? (Is James martin a pastry chef?)
I was just looking through some old letters and thoughts turned to my childhood high spots of shopping trips to Birmingham, and the dim rather brown shop where we would go for tea and cakes. What a safe comforting word Kunzle was!
I think that the reason for Kunzle cakes failure since the 60s is that the heart went out of production and with it quality ingredients. This is something that seems to be changing recently as the wheel turns full circle and people are searching for artisan foods.

So, (i) Jemma Roberts has recipes. (ii) Lyons were the last custodians of Kunzle. And Nigella Lawson’s family were owners of Lyons (there’s your celebrity chef).
Right then, whose got her e-mail address?

I was very interested in Jemma Roberts story and would be most interested to know the name of her grandad for an article I am presently writing.
